Architectural Drawing of Cascade Supportive Housing

DESC is working on a new housing development to be built in the Cascade neighborhood at 424 Minor Avenue North, between Republican and Harrison Streets.  Opening in August 2010, Canaday House is an 83 unit permanent supportive housing project for men and women with mental illness who have spent long periods of time living on the streets or in shelters.

Like all DESC supportive housing, it is designed to help people maintain their housing, improve their lives, live as independently as possible, and achieve their highest human potential.  It benefits from DESC's established model of highly integrated housing, mental health care and treatment.

The building is named in memory of Nicholas Canaday, a former DESC volunteer and passionate advocate for homeless people.
  • 83 studio units of affordable housing; 25 units reserved for homeless veterans
  • Common space for residents on first floor (meeting rooms, common meal prep kitchen and dining area, resource room, TV lounge, staff offices, outdoor garden courtyard)
  • Operates using a Housing First model designed to eliminate the chaos of homelessness and work toward clinical and social stabilization of residents
  • Construction began July 2009; scheduled opening August 2010
