Housing

Rainier House

Opened in February 2009, Rainier House is a 50 unit permanent supportive housing project for men and women with mental illness who have spent long periods of time living on the streets or in shelters.

Like all DESC supportive housing, is designed to help people maintain their housing, improve their lives, live as independently as possible, and achieve their highest human potential.  It benefits from DESC's established model of highly integrated housing, mental health care and treatment.

Project Information
  • 50 studio units of affordable housing with full kitchens and baths
  • Common space for residents on first floor (meeting rooms, common meal prep kitchen and dining area, resource room, TV lounge, staff offices, outdoor porch)
  • Operates using a Housing First model designed to eliminate the chaos of homelessness and work toward clinical and social stabilization of residents
  • Universal Design features that promote accessibility and usability for everyone, including people with disabilities (wide doorways, contrasting colors, vertical cabinet pulls, etc)
  • Environmentally sound design and construction which uses less toxic interior materials and has energy saving light fixtures and mechanical systems; certified by SeaGreen (City of Seattle), BuiltSmart (Seattle City Light), anticipated three star BuiltGreen (Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties)
  • Corner retail space and community conference room designed to draw community members into the building
