Frequently Asked Questions How to Help

At DESC, we recognize that ending homelessness requires a strong commitment from all members of our community - from government officials to concerned individuals.  In light of this, we do our best to partner with others throughout Seattle and King County to collectively serve the most vulnerable members of our community.

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions by prospective volunteers:

Q: What type of time commitment will I have to make?
A: We ask individual volunteers to commit to 6 months of service.  Continuity and dependability are very important to the success of the volunteer program.  Shifts vary from 2-6 hours depending on volunteer position and location.

Groups are encouraged to volunteer for one-time projects.  Email the Volunteer Coordinator to inquire about a particular time your group is available.

Q: I work all week.  Are there opportunities available for me to volunteer?
A: We have shifts in the evenings and on the weekends.

Q: I'm only 17 years old, is that ok?
A: Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age.  There are no exceptions.

Q: Do I get to choose where I volunteer at?
A: You may choose from any of the positions listed in our list of current volunteer opportunities.

If you have additional questions please contact the Volunteer and Donations Coordinator at (206) 515-1517, or email volunteers@desc.org.
