Employment Services

Employment plays a big role in an individual's self esteem and personal satisfaction. In the case of men and women dealing with mental illness, developmental disabilities, and dependencies, successful employment is also recognized as a valuable tool in furthering their recovery and contributing to long-term housing stability.

DESC's Employment Services develops and creates partnerships with local businesses and employment providers. We work closely with area businesses to assist them in finding quality workers who match the employer's unique needs. From the wide variety of potential applicants, DESC provides screened, motivated, job seekers who are well known to DESC. Employment Services staff are prepared to assist businesses with their hiring and retention needs at no cost to the employer. Working in partnership with The Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, all services provided through DESC's Employment Services are provided at no cost to the employer.

We help many individuals move from a life on the street, to our supportive housing, on to life in the community through the development of basic life and work skills. With support from our wide array of integrated mental health, sobriety enhancement, and supportive housing services, DESC is creating a way out of poverty and a return to the workforce for the people we serve.

DESC has assisted hundred of individuals obtain employment as their primary path out of homelessness and toward greater stability through two distinct programs: Supported Employment Program and Connections Program.

Supported Employment
The Supported Employment Program at DESC benefits from an established model of highly integrated housing, mental health care, and clinical treatment. Many DESC clients are considered "unemployable" by mainstream vocational and employment programs, yet DESC have been able to provide even the most disabled and chronically homeless adults with the skills to obtain self-sufficiency.
DESC's Supportive Employment Program, launched in 2008, is integrated into DESC's state-licensed clinical programs and focuses on those men and women who face the most significant challenges to succeeding in the work place. We prepare and support participants, both employees and employers, to ensure success and satisfaction for both parties. Together our Employment Specialists hold more than 30 years of assisting men and women with disabilities return to work and engage in the community.

DESC's Supported Employment Program is characterized by:

  • Comprehensive assessment and preparation of potential employees. Our extensive training and assessment programs prepare candidates with the skills that will make them valued employees.
  • Individual matching of employee skills and experience with available positions. Because mental illness is not limited to any particular economic sphere, nationality, or education level, we have a large pool of motivated applicants with a wide variety of skills and experience.
  • Job coaching for as long as the employee or employer desires. Employment Specialists and mental health case managers remain available for immediate response indefinitely.

CONNECTIONS
The Connections Program, founded in 2006, is a community hygiene and employment service center for homeless adults who are not involved in the mental health system. It provides case management and a variety of day services to adults who are urrently homeless and looking for employment and housing. Using a strenghts based approach to assess clients' needs, Connections case managers conduct comprehensive assessments documenting clients' barriers to successful employment and gathering information regarding clients' unique housing situations, employment, and medical histories. Employment Specialists help clients research, identify and apply for jobs, assist with writing resumes, completing applications, and prepare participants for interview. more
