AT DESC, our vision is to improve equity and social justice by improving health care in our community. Many people who experience homelessness have serious mental health conditions like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depression. Health care systems don’t offer these individuals what they need.
It’s time for health care to be accessible for those who most need it. With The Clinic at Hobson Place, DESC and Harborview Medical Center have established the first local full-scale health care clinic specifically designed to meet the complex needs of people living with disabilities who have experienced the longest periods of homelessness. The new clinic will result in a healthier community for everyone by better addressing the health care needs of this group.
Hobson Place is also a supportive housing building featuring 177 studio units in total. The Clinic at Hobson Place serves residents of the supportive housing and the broader community, and creates new employment opportunities in the neighborhood.
Phase 1
The first phase of the project, built on the north portion of the parcel, opened on Oct. 7, 2020. Individuals who are disabled and formerly homeless now live in its 85 affordable studio apartments with supportive services and indoor/outdoor community spaces.
Phase 2
The second and final phase of the project included the integrated physical and behavioral health care clinic and additional affordable housing units. People with disabilities who have experienced homelessness live in those 92 new units. Construction on phase 2 began in May 2020, and DESC held a virtual grand opening for the building on Jan. 25, 2022. DESC owns and operates both buildings and provides tenants with management and supportive services.
